Alessandro Lai was born in Cagliari. Shortly after his bachelor in History of Contemporary Art in 1994, he began to work as a costume assistant in the prestigious costume house Tirelli di Rome. Here he will meet the tailors that will become his masters: Piero Tosi, Gabriella Pescucci and Maurizio Millenotti.

He has made costumes for cinema productions (Senso ’45 by Tinto Brass, Un giorno perfetto by Ferzan Ozpetek,…) television (Renzo e Lucia by Francesca Archibugi, L’Ultima trincea by Alberto Sironi,…), opera productions (Carmen by Bizet, I Capuleti e i Montecchi by Bellini,…) and theatre productions (Closer by P. Marber, Salome by Oscar Wilde,…)
